How to Prepare for Your Senior Photo Session: Everything You Need to Know

A little prep goes a long way. Here's exactly what to do — and when to do it.

Senior session day is one of those experiences that can feel either totally effortless or a little chaotic — and the difference almost always comes down to how prepared you were going in. The seniors who show up relaxed, confident, and ready to have fun are almost always the ones who did a little homework beforehand.

The good news is the prep isn't complicated. Here's a simple week-by-week guide to making sure you walk into your session feeling like yourself — just the very best version of it.

The week-by-week prep timeline

Hair & makeup — a few honest thoughts

For a bold, editorial session, professionally done hair and makeup makes a real difference. Photos require a slightly heavier hand than everyday makeup — more definition, more staying power — and a professional knows exactly how to achieve that. If it's in your budget, book your hair and makeup appointment for the morning of your session.

If you're doing it yourself, the golden rule is to go a little more than you think you need to. What feels like "too much" in the mirror often looks just right on camera. And bring your makeup with you to touch up between locations — a little powder and lip gloss goes a long way for keeping things fresh throughout the session.

The seniors who enjoy their sessions the most are always the ones who came prepared — and then let go of the rest.

What to bring on session day

What not to do the day of

A few things worth avoiding on session day: don't try a bold new hair color or style you've never worn before — this isn't the time to experiment. Don't wear tight waistbands or sock lines that will leave marks on your skin. Don't skip eating because you're nervous — low blood sugar shows up as low energy in photos. And don't stress about being "photogenic." That's my job, not yours.

💡 The most important thing: Come as yourself. Not a polished, performed version of yourself — just you, in outfits you love, ready to have a good time. Everything else falls into place from there.

A note on nerves

Almost every senior tells me they're nervous before their session. And almost every single one of them tells me afterward that the nerves disappeared within the first ten minutes. Being in front of a camera feels strange at first — and then it doesn't. We ease into it together, starting with movement and natural moments before anything that feels like a "pose." By the time we hit our stride, most seniors forget the camera is there at all.

If you're a senior here in the Pell City or St. Clair County area and you're getting ready to book your session, know that the planning process doesn't stop at booking — I'm here to help you prep every step of the way so that session day feels easy.
